When Zipcar, the world’s largest car sharing service, needed a construction manager to move their corporate headquarters from Cambridge to Boston’s innovation district, Wise was sure to be behind the wheel. The fit-out consisted of 46,000 SF of offices, meeting rooms, restrooms, an employee kitchen and lounge, reception area and waiting room, throughout six floors. Zipcar wanted to maintain the buildings old-style industrial charm while bringing in more modern and environmentally friendly elements, such as repurposed barn-board and recycled features. The project was completed on a tight schedule, and Wise worked closely with the design team to ensure unforeseen conditions were dealt with quickly. Due to the age of the building, installing the high-end plank flooring was more difficult than on most projects, and required more time for preparation. Additionally, on-site conditions, such as the buildings structural elements, posed a challenge for mechanical installation. The Wise team was able to work closely with the engineer to reroute plumbing around existing beams without disrupting the intended layout. Wise quickly improvised a white wash treatment for the repurposed barn-board when it arrived in a different color than specified in the design. Zipcar appreciated Wise’s quick thinking and ability to match the designer’s vision while keeping the project on-time and on-budget.
